SUMMARY:The Promise of Play: Tauranga
DESCRIPTION:The Promise of PlayLorraine SandsWednesday 17 July\, 6:30-8:30pm“Play: How it shapes the brain\, opens the imagination\, and invigorates the soul”I share Stuart Brown’s book title with you because it gives such a visual interpretation of the way play grows a child’s brain\, builds empathy\, fosters social learning and generates creativity and innovation. Alison Gopnik’s comments are challenging too. “Our job is not to shape our children’s minds; it is to let those minds explore all the possibilities that the world allows”.Teachers’ practise that honours free play honours the aspirations of Te Whāriki as we are all asked to enable agentic children to have choices about what to learn\, when\, and with whom. This workshop provides practical examples of how to design environments for authentic free play to unfold. We will explore how to use Learning Stories to analyse the dispositions and working theories that are strengthened when children immerse themselves in play. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n A wide range of topics presented from 6:30-8:30pm!\nClick here to go back to the full series \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Please read our Terms and Conditions before purchasing.

SUMMARY:The image of the kaiako; writing Learning Stories for each other
DESCRIPTION:The image of the kaiako; writing Learning Stories for each otherEmma Parangi\, Educational Leadership Project \nWednesday 14 August\, 7-8:30pm \nJust as our view of tamariki is culturally and socially created\, so are our views of ourselves as kaiako. How does this show up in our whanaungatanga with our colleagues\, mentors\, mentees\, and student kaiako? Are we engaging in regular reflective practices exploring our thoughts and feelings about our roles as kaiako?Join Emma for this wānanga to unpack these pātai together. We will explore how learning stories are the perfect form to shift\, uplift\, broaden\, or strengthen our views of ourselves and each other. Learning stories can be multi-functional\, and an essential function is to communicate with who you are writing to\, through a strength based approach to learning and growth. Writing learning stories for each other as leaders and kaiako is a wonderful way to build and maintain supportive\, growth focussed and robust team relationships. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View the other events in this series

SUMMARY:Strengthening local curriculum in early childhood settings for our pēpi
DESCRIPTION:Strengthening local curriculum in early childhood settings for our pēpiDiana Cruse\, University of Waikato \nWednesday 11 September\, 7-8:30pm \nOur pēpi thrive when they are in environments that nurture their wairua. Having a localised curriculum\, that builds upon the strengths of whānau\, hapū\, and iwi is one way to implement this. \nBuilding upon research from a 3 year Marsden research project and my PhD\, this kōrero will explore ideas for early learning settings to create and strengthen relationships with whānau\, hapū\, and iwi\, and unpack some of the benefits that this can have for our pēpi\, whānau and communities. \nAs a previous centre owner and manager\, an early childhood kaiako\, and an iwi early childhood education advisor\, I will look at this through various lens of governance\, management and practice. I will also make links to our Professional Growth Cycle\, Internal evaluation and Assessment practices\, to assist our amazing early learning kaiako in their own teaching practices. \nMauri ora! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View the other events in this series

These workshops will raise questions about whose knowledge is valued and how this relates to making explicit the relationship with time and engaging with children’s past\, present and future. \nIn the morning Alison Clark will introduce key themes from her two year study: ‘Slow knowledge and the unhurried child’ that explored the relationship with time in ECEC and draws attention to the importance of slow practices. The discussion will explore how slow knowledge can be celebrated in day to day practice\, balanced against the pressures of short term demands. How does the valuing of slow knowledge relate to how children’s past\, present and future are viewed? \nIn the afternoon Emma Parangi will facilitate wānanga centring ao Māori perspectives of these kaupapa. We will examine Māori concepts of time\, space and relationality\, and how this might inform our work as kaiako. Tamariki are a continuation of their whakapapa which extends back to the beginnings of space and time themselves. We will unpack these ideas through reflective questions and wānanga around the intersections of slow knowledge and integrating tikanga Māori (cultural practices). \nIncluding a delicious morning tea and lunch!

SUMMARY:Whakapapa – foundation\, process\, and potential
DESCRIPTION:Whakapapa – foundation\, process\, and potentialEmma ParangiWednesday 16 October\, 6:30-8:30pmThis will now be held online. All registered will receive a link to the recording.Learning Stories provide a snapshot of where a tamaiti is in their learning\, their connections\, and their trajectory. Learning Stories weave together the moving strands of where that tamaiti is in space and time. When we craft Learning Stories we aim to be guided by an authentic knowledge of who tamariki are. For Tangata Whenua\, tamariki are a continuation of whakapapa which extends back to the beginnings of space and time themselves. This is a complex concept embedded in a Māori worldview of time\, space and relationality. Join Emma in this wānanga to explore whakapapa as the source\, journey and possibility of āhurei for the tamariki Māori we learn alongside. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Please read our Terms and Conditions before purchasing. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This has moved to an ONLINE event. DESCRIPTION:Ko te kai a te Rangatira\, he kōrero – the food of the chiefs is dialogueMaria Sydney\, Educational Leadership Project \nWednesday 4 December\, 7:00-8:30pm \nWe all know how important\, vital really\, it is to build and sustain respectful\, reciprocal relationships with whanau in our hapori. We all know how important it is to value parent/ whānau voice in our curriculum. But\, how do we make this happen when for example\, our whānau aren’t really contributing on Story Park? How do we make this happen when our we are having our whānau aspirations or parent voice forms left empty? On reflecting on the whakatauki “Ko te kai ā te Rangatira\, he kōrero – the food of the chiefs is dialogue” I think some of the solutions we seek are hidden in these kupu. Join us in a waananga that will aim to explore strategies that will help build and sustain whānau engagement and participation in your spaces. Mauri ora!
