DESCRIPTION:Sustainability challenges and strategies for kaiakoDr. Jenny RitchieSchool of Education\, Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington \nWednesday 13 March\, 7-8:30pm \nA year ago many parts of Aotearoa witnessed extreme weather events. In some cases extensive damage has caused families ongoing distress and dislocation. It is therefore timely for kaiako to consider our responsibilities with regard to these increasing climate related disturbances. This presentation will provide an overview of contexts for sustainability obligations with a focus on kaitiakitanga as recognised in Te Whāriki 2017. This will be followed by some examples from previous research\, of teachers and children enacting this obligation to care for ourselves\, others and the places around us. \nBrief bio:Dr Jenny Ritchie focuses her work on education for social\, cultural\, ecological and climate justice. Her research interests include exploring ways to transform a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi into enactment within teacher education and beyond; identifying pedagogies that affirm and support children’s cultural\, spiritual\, and emotional wellbeing and citizenship enactment; and how understandings of Māori conceptualisations can enhance pedagogies that protect and care for our planet. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				View the other events in this series

How then might we embrace the unique stories of our community while being very clear about the kind of learning culture we collectively aspire to? DESCRIPTION:Sewing Pūrākau in the Fabric of Our Place – A Kaiako Te Tiriti PerspectiveCatalina Thompson\, Educational Leadership Project \nWednesday 10 July\, 7-8:30pm \nLocalised curriculum or place-based curriculum are phrases we often hear in our pedagogical discourse. In essence\, these concepts are concerned with the relationship between people and their identities\, the place which they occupy as a learning community and the spaces around it\, imbued with story and history. The unique fabric of our learning space is what localises our curriculum. In the New Zealand Annual Review of Education\, 2009\, Wally Penetito tells us that place-based education “emerges from the particular attributes of a place and ….connects place with self and community….These curricula include multi-generational and multicultural dimensions.” For me\, one of the most powerful resources we possess in enacting meaningfully such curriculum are pūrākau o tangata whenua which\, from a Mātauranga Māori perspective “seek to explain who we are\, where we are from\, why we do things the way we do and how we organise ourselves with an eye to both past and future.” (Puwhare R.\, 2016). Moreover\, we cannot speak of truly honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our early childhood spaces without knowing the stories of the land we stand on. But how can we practically achieve this ‘knowing’ for our tamariki me ōna whānau? This lecture seeks to give one answer to a complex yet intriguing question from a kaiako Te Tiriti perspective. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				View the other events in this series

Through sharing stories from practice\, and opportunities for discussion\, David will reconnect us with the importance of reflecting on ‘what’s worth knowing’ and embracing joyful possibilities. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				David Gilkes has been involved in early years education in Australia for 30 years\, the majority of this time working as a teacher alongside 4 and 5 year old children and their families. In 2014\, David was awarded a National Excellence in Teaching Award for Innovation in Early Childhood. He has been Director of an Early Learning Centre in Canberra and an Early Years Network Leader in the Tasmanian Department of Education. David spent eight years as convener of the Tasmanian Reggio Emilia Network\, part of the Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange. He has participated in numerous study tours to Reggio Emilia\, as well as Forest Schools in Denmark. David now works full time as an Education Consultant and considers himself a lifelong\, curious learner and a proud wobbler of thinking.

DESCRIPTION:Strengthening local curriculum in early childhood settings for our pēpiDiana Cruse\, University of Waikato \nWednesday 11 September\, 7-8:30pm \nOur pēpi thrive when they are in environments that nurture their wairua. Having a localised curriculum\, that builds upon the strengths of whānau\, hapū\, and iwi is one way to implement this. \nBuilding upon research from a 3 year Marsden research project and my PhD\, this kōrero will explore ideas for early learning settings to create and strengthen relationships with whānau\, hapū\, and iwi\, and unpack some of the benefits that this can have for our pēpi\, whānau and communities. \nAs a previous centre owner and manager\, an early childhood kaiako\, and an iwi early childhood education advisor\, I will look at this through various lens of governance\, management and practice. The discussion will explore how slow knowledge can be celebrated in day to day practice\, balanced against the pressures of short term demands. How does the valuing of slow knowledge relate to how children’s past\, present and future are viewed? \nIn the afternoon Emma Parangi will facilitate wānanga centring ao Māori perspectives of these kaupapa. We will examine Māori concepts of time\, space and relationality\, and how this might inform our work as kaiako. Tamariki are a continuation of their whakapapa which extends back to the beginnings of space and time themselves. We will unpack these ideas through reflective questions and wānanga around the intersections of slow knowledge and integrating tikanga Māori (cultural practices). \nIncluding a delicious morning tea and lunch!
