SUMMARY:Sustainability challenges and strategies for kaiako
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability challenges and strategies for kaiakoDr. Jenny RitchieSchool of Education\, Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington \nWednesday 13 March\, 7-8:30pm \nA year ago many parts of Aotearoa witnessed extreme weather events. In some cases extensive damage has caused families ongoing distress and dislocation. It is therefore timely for kaiako to consider our responsibilities with regard to these increasing climate related disturbances. This presentation will provide an overview of contexts for sustainability obligations with a focus on kaitiakitanga as recognised in Te Whāriki 2017. This will be followed by some examples from previous research\, of teachers and children enacting this obligation to care for ourselves\, others and the places around us. \nBrief bio:Dr Jenny Ritchie focuses her work on education for social\, cultural\, ecological and climate justice. Her research interests include exploring ways to transform a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi into enactment within teacher education and beyond; identifying pedagogies that affirm and support children’s cultural\, spiritual\, and emotional wellbeing and citizenship enactment; and how understandings of Māori conceptualisations can enhance pedagogies that protect and care for our planet. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View the other events in this series

SUMMARY:Opening the door on teaching and learning for infants in ECE
DESCRIPTION:Opening the door on teaching and learning for infants in ECE: Intuited pedagogy or intentional practice Professor E. Jayne White\, School of Teacher Education\, Faculty of Education\, University of Canterbury \nWednesday 10 April\, 7-8:30pm \nDespite the fact that infants have been part of the NZ ECE curriculum for well over twenty years\, the pedagogies that orient their learning are not easily asserted. There are several reasons for this – not least the lodging of infant pedagogies within wider agendas for older learners that emphasise intentionality. In this session Jayne will draw from her recent research to explore a series of alternative dialogic approaches to infant pedagogies and practices that turn to sensing\, relational pedagogies at their heart. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View the other events in this series

SUMMARY:Beyond the Horizon: Continuing the journey into Kei Tua o te Pae – Part 2 Unleashed!
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Horizon: Continuing the journey into Kei Tua o te Pae – Part 2 Unleashed!Wendy Lee\, Educational Leadership Project \nWednesday 8 May\, 7-8:30pm \nLast year\, my lecture set the stage for Kei Tua o te Pae\, titled “Kei tua o te Pae\, beyond the horizon: An opportunity to revisit our Learning Stories journey.” Now\, two decades since the first publication\, we’ve witnessed significant advancements in documenting children’s learning assessment. In part two\, I’ll further this journey\, exploring the crucial aspects raised by Kei Tua o te Pae\, starting with the importance of Māori educational advancement. The focus will then shift to ‘assessment for learning’ Te aromatawai mō te akoranga\, covering key elements like everyday contexts\, embracing uncertainty\, listening to mokopuna\, and collective assessments. Throughout\, I’ll update documentation\, showcasing the richness of our two-decade journey and the enduring value of exemplars. The resource\, anchored in the powerful metaphors of Te Whāriki and Kei Tua o te Pae\, continues to fortify and enrich our educational practice in Aotearoa and beyond. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View the other events in this series

SUMMARY:Weaving Te Whāriki Aspirations into Our Collective Learning Culture
DESCRIPTION:Weaving Te Whāriki Aspirations into Our Collective Learning CultureLorraine Sands\, Educational Leadership Project \nWednesday 12 June\, 7-8:30pm \nWe all have different stories\, varied experiences\, and unique world views. We celebrate this uniqueness\, yet we are also committed\, as early childhood kaiako\, to being responsive to our mokopuna in ways that bring Te Whāriki aspirations to life. How then might we embrace the unique stories of our community while being very clear about the kind of learning culture we collectively aspire to? How do we figure out together ways to live Te Whāriki each day\, in the small listening responsive\, empathic moments as well as in the big value-laden messages we send to mokopuna\, whānau\, and each other through the ways we design our learning environments? \nThis workshop considers these ideas\, particularly in light of the ways we nurture each other’s professional growth and provide evidence for ERO and the MOE that we meet our obligations to document our progress towards embedding Te Whāriki aspirations into our individual and collective practices. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View the other events in this series

SUMMARY:Sewing Pūrākau in the Fabric of Our Place – A Kaiako Te Tiriti Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Sewing Pūrākau in the Fabric of Our Place – A Kaiako Te Tiriti PerspectiveCatalina Thompson\, Educational Leadership Project \nWednesday 10 July\, 7-8:30pm \nLocalised curriculum or place-based curriculum are phrases we often hear in our pedagogical discourse. In essence\, these concepts are concerned with the relationship between people and their identities\, the place which they occupy as a learning community and the spaces around it\, imbued with story and history. The unique fabric of our learning space is what localises our curriculum. In the New Zealand Annual Review of Education\, 2009\, Wally Penetito tells us that place-based education “emerges from the particular attributes of a place and ….connects place with self and community….These curricula include multi-generational and multicultural dimensions.” For me\, one of the most powerful resources we possess in enacting meaningfully such curriculum are pūrākau o tangata whenua which\, from a Mātauranga Māori perspective “seek to explain who we are\, where we are from\, why we do things the way we do and how we organise ourselves with an eye to both past and future.” (Puwhare R.\, 2016). Moreover\, we cannot speak of truly honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our early childhood spaces without knowing the stories of the land we stand on. But how can we practically achieve this ‘knowing’ for our tamariki me ōna whānau? This lecture seeks to give one answer to a complex yet intriguing question from a kaiako Te Tiriti perspective. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View the other events in this series

SUMMARY:The Promise of Play: Tauranga
DESCRIPTION:The Promise of PlayLorraine SandsWednesday 17 July\, 6:30-8:30pm“Play: How it shapes the brain\, opens the imagination\, and invigorates the soul”I share Stuart Brown’s book title with you because it gives such a visual interpretation of the way play grows a child’s brain\, builds empathy\, fosters social learning and generates creativity and innovation. Alison Gopnik’s comments are challenging too. “Our job is not to shape our children’s minds; it is to let those minds explore all the possibilities that the world allows”.Teachers’ practise that honours free play honours the aspirations of Te Whāriki as we are all asked to enable agentic children to have choices about what to learn\, when\, and with whom. This workshop provides practical examples of how to design environments for authentic free play to unfold. We will explore how to use Learning Stories to analyse the dispositions and working theories that are strengthened when children immerse themselves in play. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n A wide range of topics presented from 6:30-8:30pm!\nClick here to go back to the full series \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Please read our Terms and Conditions before purchasing.

SUMMARY:The image of the kaiako; writing Learning Stories for each other
DESCRIPTION:The image of the kaiako; writing Learning Stories for each otherEmma Parangi\, Educational Leadership Project \nWednesday 14 August\, 7-8:30pm \nJust as our view of tamariki is culturally and socially created\, so are our views of ourselves as kaiako. How does this show up in our whanaungatanga with our colleagues\, mentors\, mentees\, and student kaiako? Are we engaging in regular reflective practices exploring our thoughts and feelings about our roles as kaiako?Join Emma for this wānanga to unpack these pātai together. We will explore how learning stories are the perfect form to shift\, uplift\, broaden\, or strengthen our views of ourselves and each other. Learning stories can be multi-functional\, and an essential function is to communicate with who you are writing to\, through a strength based approach to learning and growth. Writing learning stories for each other as leaders and kaiako is a wonderful way to build and maintain supportive\, growth focussed and robust team relationships. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n View the other events in this series

SUMMARY:Strengthening local curriculum in early childhood settings for our pēpi
DESCRIPTION:Strengthening local curriculum in early childhood settings for our pēpiDiana Cruse\, University of Waikato \nWednesday 11 September\, 7-8:30pm \nOur pēpi thrive when they are in environments that nurture their wairua. Having a localised curriculum\, that builds upon the strengths of whānau\, hapū\, and iwi is one way to implement this. \nBuilding upon research from a 3 year Marsden research project and my PhD\, this kōrero will explore ideas for early learning settings to create and strengthen relationships with whānau\, hapū\, and iwi\, and unpack some of the benefits that this can have for our pēpi\, whānau and communities. \nAs a previous centre owner and manager\, an early childhood kaiako\, and an iwi early childhood education advisor\, I will look at this through various lens of governance\, management and practice. These workshops will raise questions about whose knowledge is valued and how this relates to making explicit the relationship with time and engaging with children’s past\, present and future. \nIn the morning Alison Clark will introduce key themes from her two year study: ‘Slow knowledge and the unhurried child’ that explored the relationship with time in ECEC and draws attention to the importance of slow practices. The discussion will explore how slow knowledge can be celebrated in day to day practice\, balanced against the pressures of short term demands. How does the valuing of slow knowledge relate to how children’s past\, present and future are viewed? \nIn the afternoon Emma Parangi will facilitate wānanga centring ao Māori perspectives of these kaupapa. We will examine Māori concepts of time\, space and relationality\, and how this might inform our work as kaiako. Tamariki are a continuation of their whakapapa which extends back to the beginnings of space and time themselves. We will unpack these ideas through reflective questions and wānanga around the intersections of slow knowledge and integrating tikanga Māori (cultural practices). \nIncluding a delicious morning tea and lunch!

DESCRIPTION:Whakapapa – foundation\, process\, and potentialEmma ParangiWednesday 16 October\, 6:30-8:30pmThis will now be held online. All registered will receive a link to the recording.Learning Stories provide a snapshot of where a tamaiti is in their learning\, their connections\, and their trajectory. Learning Stories weave together the moving strands of where that tamaiti is in space and time. When we craft Learning Stories we aim to be guided by an authentic knowledge of who tamariki are. For Tangata Whenua\, tamariki are a continuation of whakapapa which extends back to the beginnings of space and time themselves. This is a complex concept embedded in a Māori worldview of time\, space and relationality. Join Emma in this wānanga to explore whakapapa as the source\, journey and possibility of āhurei for the tamariki Māori we learn alongside. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Please read our Terms and Conditions before purchasing. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This has moved to an ONLINE event. SUMMARY:Ko te kai a te Rangatira\, he kōrero – the food of the chiefs is dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Ko te kai a te Rangatira\, he kōrero – the food of the chiefs is dialogueMaria Sydney\, Educational Leadership Project \nWednesday 4 December\, 7:00-8:30pm \nWe all know how important\, vital really\, it is to build and sustain respectful\, reciprocal relationships with whanau in our hapori. We all know how important it is to value parent/ whānau voice in our curriculum. But\, how do we make this happen when for example\, our whānau aren’t really contributing on Story Park? How do we make this happen when our we are having our whānau aspirations or parent voice forms left empty? On reflecting on the whakatauki “Ko te kai ā te Rangatira\, he kōrero – the food of the chiefs is dialogue” I think some of the solutions we seek are hidden in these kupu. Join us in a waananga that will aim to explore strategies that will help build and sustain whānau engagement and participation in your spaces. Mauri ora!

Te Whāriki offers us a whāriki manaaki\, a nurturing mat woven with purpose and care\, for our tamariki to grow\, flourish\, and take flight. But for this sacred weaving to be strong\, the tūāpapa beneath it must be steady\, intentional\, and resilient. \nTe Whakapakari i te Tūāpapa invites kaiako\, leaders\, and learning communities across the motu to pause\, wānanga\, and ask:· What is the state of our foundation now\, post-Covid?· Where is it strong? Where might it need healing\, re-strengthening\, or even courageous re-structuring?· How do we return to the heart of our kaupapa with renewed clarity and purpose? \nTogether we will explore how the strands of Mana Atua\, Mana Whenua\, Mana Reo\, Mana Tangata\, and Mana Aotūroa\, when truly grounded in ngā hononga\, whānau tangata\, kotahitanga\, and whakamana\, create not only a strong foundation\, but a launchpad. From this base\, tamariki can soar (kia rere arorangi te tamaiti)\, confident\, competent\, and standing tall in the world as rangatira in their own right. \nThis is a space for honest reflection\, reconnection\, and recommitment. It has captured the stories\, wairua\, and aroha from the past 50 years of our kindergarten whānau and celebrates the uniqueness of our place.Te Ao Māori was the kaupapa that guided this process\, and our links with our local maunga and iwi were strengthened. Storytelling was key to the creation of our taonga\, and this process strengthened community engagement\, brought cultures together\, and produced an artefact that fosters a sense of belonging and enhances the mana of the past\, present\, and future community.
