Weaving Stories of Place, Identity and Belonging
Roberta Skeoch
NEW DATE: Wednesday 29 October, 6:30-8:00pm
This kōrero explores how early childhood kaiako use indigenous knowledge and traditional stories to foster a sense of identity, belonging, and inclusion for mokopuna, in diverse learning environments. Grounded in Sociocultural Theory, Māori theories of learning, and narrative assessment, the session highlights research findings showing how Māori stories enrich the curriculum, strengthen cultural identity, and enhance engagement—especially for Māori learners. Through discussion and reflection, participants will consider how culturally responsive teaching practices can support all children to connect with their place, language, and heritage.
